The San Francisco police have encountered some ATM keyboards glued together, scammers block keys Get in, Cancel and Delete to cheat and steal money:
After the victims enter their card and write the PIN cannot continue with the transaction or withdraw the card, they get nervous, they don't know what to do and they go for help.
That's when the scammer shows up and withdraws all the money he can, breaking the keys or using the on-screen keyboard the victim didn't know what was available 🙂
The technique has been known for years and can also be combined with other elements such as a fake phone or a fake number whom the person calls for instructions thinking they are talking to a bank official, when in fact it is the scammer.
What is to be done in such a situation?
Do not leave the ATM.
The system should automatically cancel the operation after a certain period of inactivity, but if this does not happen, you must call the bank (a known number) from the cell phone or the police, if you cannot ask someone to do it.
These scams are usually done at night, so be careful.
Also, the PIN should never be disclosed even to bank employees.
